COACHBUILDERS - DUPLE DOMINANT
Always playing catch-up to their competitor in the North and never quite getting there. Plaxtons must have enjoyed the challenge! The Dominant introduced in 1972 was unashamedly a Plaxton Elite/Supreme wannabe (as was the ECW variant) . But it was overly fussy, and always one step behind the game. The Dominant ll hit the streets in 1976. There were some pretty examples and towards the end some of the Dominant lll ‘streamliners’ with trapeziod windows were very businesslike. The Dominant lV was a high waistrail version. But the foreigners were already invading, Van Hool and Caetano saw gaps in the market and stepped in. It was never going to be the same again. Subsequent changes of government and transport acts and the collapse of the lightweight coach market in 1980/81 all played a part. Plaxton survived. Duple didn’t and sold to their arch rival in 1989.
